Corseted by the Shake River and Sylvan Lake, her back to the ocean, Avon-By-The-Sea’s pristine beaches and exquisite Victorian façade nearly betray its ancient history. It was on these shores that Nels Avone, son of famed Norse explorer Leif Erikson, landed for the first time in continental North America in 1027. Though prophesies spoke of a garden of the gods where no man had ever stepped before, upon arrival Avone and company were greeted by the Lenape, whom they cautiously befriended. Aided by their new allies, the explorers formed a settlement between what is now Main Street, Second Avenue, Sylvania Avenue and Shark River. They named the settlement A-von-ee in honor of their chieftain. As generations passed and their descendants took to living among the Lenape, the area became known as A-von. It would take some 800 years for new settlers to arrive again. Previously little more than a fishing spot, the Philadelphia tobacco baron Edward Batchelor fell in love with the area in 1878, purchasing a 300 acre farmstead here. Originally intended to be the seat of his tobacco empire, he began to see the land’s potential as a resort town, looking towards nearby Asbury Park and Long Branch, then the twin capitols of the Jersey Shore. Over the next two decades, Batchelor grew Avon-By-The-Sea into a fabulous vacation destination, more subdued than bumping Asbury Park but no less beautiful. Avon-By-The-Sea was incorporated as a borough in 1900 and has since flowered into an absolutely lovely suburb.
Avon-By-The-Sea remains one of the most picturesque beach towns on the Jersey Shore. A salty breeze rolls in from off the coast, keeping everything crisp and cool while the sun bathes the town in its splendid rays. With the beach right in their backyards, suntanned residents live like they’re on vacation. Sample any number of delectable offerings on Main Street or step out and see what’s good nearby. Neighboring Belmar and Neptune City, only minutes from Asbury Park, Long Branch and Deal, there’s never a shortage of shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities. Centrally located and a quintessential shore town, come see what makes Avon-By-The-Sea such a great place to visit and an even better place to live.
